How to Spot a Fake

Designer handbags are a coveted status symbol.  So, it is no surprise that fakes are abundant.  These fakes are often passed off as the real thing to unsuspecting buyers.  Here are some things to look for to make sure you are purchasing a genuine designer bag.

Some impostors are not even modeled after a genuine designer bag.  If you’ve never seen a similar bag from the purported designer, do some research before you buy.  Most designers have websites that showcase all of their models, so it’s not difficult to find out if the style is, in fact, authentic.

Most authentic handbags come with some sort of ID card or certificate of authenticity.  Designer packaging and dust bags are also common.  These can be, and often are, counterfeited.  But if the bag doesn’t come with anything to verify its origins, you should certainly beware.

Craftsmanship is very important.  Designer handbags are carefully crafted, usually by hand, which is why they are so expensive. Imitation bags are usually mass-produced, resulting in lower quality.  Check the stitching for straightness and durability.  Check the fabric for color and quality, and check any fasteners and zippers for durability and functionality.

If you already own a bag by the designer in question, look for identifying stamps, embroidery, or other trademark markings on your bag.  If you don’t, research the bags online or at a known, reputable retailer.  Zipper pulls and buckles are common places for these.  If these markings are not present on a bag purported to be manufactured by the same designer, it could be an indication of a knock-off.  Also check the quality of the marking.  It should not be crooked, blurry, or otherwise imperfect.

These are some of the signs of a fake designer handbag.  But many imposters are skilled at imitating designer bags down to the last detail.  The best advice is to stick with reputable retailers.  Especially when buying online, do your homework and make sure that the seller is an authorized retailer of the brand offered.  This will help ensure that you get the quality product that you are paying for.
